How do I ask people why they cancelled?
Kicklace · Updated 22 September 2026
The moment Stripe tells Kicklace a subscription ended, Cancelled: ask why is ready to send: one paused email asking, once, what was missing. Read the words, change them if you want to, switch it on, and the replies land with you rather than an address nobody reads.
Cancelled: ask why
Open Email, under Lifecycle: Cancelled: ask why is one of the eight, paused, and waiting on one thing — Stripe. The moment Stripe tells Kicklace a subscription ended, the row is ready to send; nothing else needs connecting.
Its draft asks one question and means it: "Your subscription has ended, and nothing more will be charged. If you have a minute, reply and tell us what was missing. We read every answer." It is words to rewrite, not a fixed script, the same as any of the eight.
A reply lands with you — Reply-To on the email is yours, so an answer comes back to be read rather than into an address nobody watches. And it only ever goes once: the first time a subscription of theirs ends, never twice for the same person.
Set it up
- Connect Stripe under Connections, if you have not already. It is what tells Kicklace when a subscription actually ends.
- Open Email, under Lifecycle, and open Cancelled: ask why.
- Read what it says, and change the words if you want different ones — it is a draft, in your own words to change.
- Press Activate. Two clicks, the same as any of the eight.
What it does not do
It does not send until you switch it on, and opening it to read is not the same as activating it. It does not need a domain, a DNS record or a Resend account to start — the shared sender covers it, the same as every lifecycle email. And it never asks twice: once a person has been sent it, they are not sent it again.
