A Mailchimp alternative for SaaS founders: lifecycle emails
Mailchimp is built for newsletters and campaigns. Kicklace sends the lifecycle emails a SaaS needs, written from your site, and is free up to 1,000 contacts.
The short answer
Mailchimp is built around audiences, campaigns and newsletters. A SaaS mostly needs a different kind of email, the lifecycle email: the welcome after sign-up, the nudge when someone stalls, the thank-you when they pay, the note when a card fails. Those go out because of what a person did, not because of a date on a calendar.
Kicklace is built around that second kind. It reads your website, works out the stages your customers go through, and writes the emails for each stage in your voice. If your main job is a designed newsletter to a big audience, Mailchimp is the better pick.
Where Mailchimp is the better pick
- Designed newsletters and campaigns. As of October 2026, Mailchimp lists an email builder, templates, A/B testing and landing pages. Kicklace has no drag-and-drop builder, on purpose: an email is plain words in one of two styles, Plain or Letterhead.
- A wider marketing toolbox. Mailchimp also lists surveys, segmentation, reports and send time optimization. Kicklace does one job and does not try to cover the rest.
- Generative AI for copy. Mailchimp lists AI tools for writing copy and subject lines on its features page. Kicklace writes whole emails for you, from what it read on your site and where each email sits on your map.
Where Kicklace is different
- Emails follow what people do. Everyone sits on a Lifecycle map at the stage they reached: visitor, signed up, activated, paying, and your own stages. When someone arrives at a stage, its first email goes within about a minute. Nobody is moved by hand.
- It writes the first draft of everything. Paste your site's address and Kicklace reads what you sell, then writes your welcome, your nudge and the rest. Try it on your own site in the demo, with no sign-up.
- It hears your product. Payments, refunds and trials from Stripe, sign-ups from Clerk or Kinde, or one line from your own server with the kicklace package.
- Consent is kept word for word. Email to a list goes only to people who agreed, and the exact sentence they agreed to is kept beside them. Every email carries a one-click unsubscribe.
- Nothing sends until you switch it on. Before you do, Kicklace shows who would have got it over the last 30 days.
- No DNS on day one. Until you verify your own domain, Kicklace sends with your name on it from its own address, up to 50 a day.
Price
As of October 2026, Mailchimp's Free plan is limited to 250 contacts and 500 sends a month, with 250 a day, and sending pauses when you pass a limit. The paid plans are Essentials, Standard and Premium, priced by how many contacts you have. Standard comes with a 14-day free trial.
Kicklace is free up to 1,000 contacts, sending from its own address with your name on it. Your own domain is part of Starter, $25 a month. The details are on pricing.
Which one to pick
Pick Mailchimp if you send a designed newsletter or campaign to a large audience and want templates, testing and landing pages in one place. Pick Kicklace if what you need is the set of emails a SaaS should send as people sign up, try the product and pay, and you would rather read a draft than design a template. You can also use both: Mailchimp for the newsletter, Kicklace for the rest.
FAQ
Can I bring my Mailchimp list to Kicklace?
Yes. Export your audience as a CSV file and choose it under Your people. Kicklace asks which of your lists they go on and what your Mailchimp form said, and keeps that sentence as each person's consent. People who unsubscribed at Mailchimp, or whose address it cleaned, are marked as having left the list. Moving from another CRM has the steps.
Can Kicklace send a newsletter?
To a list, yes. A list's page sends one email to everybody on it, now or at a time you pick, and a list can carry a regular email every week, every other week or every month. It is a plain letter, not a designed template. If you want a designed newsletter, keep Mailchimp for that and use Kicklace for the lifecycle emails.
Do I need to write any code?
No. One script tag on your site is enough to start, and Stripe and Clerk connect without code.
