A Customer.io alternative for small SaaS teams

Customer.io runs journeys across email, push, SMS and in-app. Kicklace writes your SaaS lifecycle emails for you from your site, free up to 1,000 contacts.

The short answer

Customer.io is a customer engagement platform. It is built for teams that design journeys across email, push, SMS and in-app messages, and it does that well. Kicklace is smaller on purpose. It sends email only, and it is for a founder who builds the product and would rather not build the marketing too: it reads your website, works out the stages your customers go through, and writes the emails for each stage in your voice.

If someone on your team owns messaging, or you need more than email, Customer.io is the better pick. If the lifecycle emails never get written because you are busy building, Kicklace is the one that writes them.

Where Customer.io is the better pick

  • More than email. As of October 2026, Customer.io describes journeys across email, push, SMS and in-app messaging. Kicklace sends email.
  • Segments and workflows. Customer.io lists audience segmentation with dynamic segments, and a workflow engine for journeys that branch.
  • Room to grow. Its Premium and Enterprise plans have custom volumes and pricing, so there is a plan for a large team and a lot of messaging.
  • An AI agent of its own. Its homepage describes an AI Agent that turns a single prompt into an automation with triggers, content, timing and logic. If you like describing an automation in words and then building on it, that is there too.

Where Kicklace is different

  • It starts from your website. Paste your site's address and Kicklace reads what you sell, what it is built with and what forms it has. Then it writes your welcome, your nudge for people who signed up and stalled, and the rest. See it on your own site in the demo, with no sign-up.
  • One map of your customers. Every person sits on a Lifecycle map at the stage they reached: signed up, activated, paying, or your own. Where someone stands is worked out from what they did, never set by hand, and each stage carries its emails.
  • Nothing sends until you switch it on. Before you do, Kicklace shows who would have got it over the last 30 days.
  • Nothing to set up before your first send. Until you verify your own domain, Kicklace sends with your name on it from its own address, up to 50 a day. No DNS records on day one, and sending without DNS setup says what the trade-off is.
  • It hears your stack. Sign-ups from Clerk or Kinde, payments from Stripe, deploys from Vercel, or one line from your own server with the kicklace package.

Price

As of October 2026, Customer.io's Essentials plan starts at $100 a month, billed monthly, and includes 5,000 profiles and 1 million emails a month. Premium starts at $1,000 a month, billed yearly, and Enterprise pricing is not published. Its pricing page lists no free plan. It offers a trial, and a Startup Program that gives a year free to early-stage companies that have raised under $10M. People and objects count together as profiles, and a profile counts for the month if it existed at any point in it.

Kicklace is free up to 1,000 contacts, sending from its own address with your name on it. Your own domain is part of Starter, $25 a month. The details are on pricing.

Which one to pick

Pick Customer.io if you want one tool for every channel, you have the time to design the journeys, and you are happy to pay for room to grow. Pick Kicklace if email is enough, and you want the lifecycle emails your product should already be sending, written for you from what your site and product say. If you are weighing a simpler tool that is also built for SaaS, the Loops comparison has the same questions.

FAQ

Can I move from Customer.io to Kicklace?

If you can export your people as a CSV file, yes. Bring it in under Your people. They come in as contacts, and nothing sends because of the import. Moving from another CRM has the steps. Then connect the tools you already use, so people move along the map as they sign up and pay.

Does Kicklace send push or SMS messages?

No. Kicklace sends email. A sequence on the map is made of emails, waits, notes to you and tasks for you.

Do I need to write any code?

No. One script tag on your site is enough to start, and Stripe, Clerk and Vercel connect without code. If you want to say what people do in your app, the kicklace package is one line from your server.
