Send email from your product without setting up DNS

You can start sending lifecycle emails today without DNS records. How to do it, what the trade-off is, and when to add your own domain.

Why DNS gets in the way

To send from your own domain, such as hello@yourproduct.com, mail providers want records on that domain that prove the mail is yours. The usual ones are SPF, DKIM and DMARC. Your email service gives you the records, you add them where your domain lives, and then you wait for them to check out.

None of that is hard, but it is an hour of detail on the day you wanted to ship. Your first emails do not have to wait for it.

What you can do instead

Send from the email service's own address, with your name on it. You add nothing to your domain. The trade-off is that the address behind your name is not yours.

Kicklace works this way until you add a domain. It sends with your name on it from its own address, up to 50 emails a day, with no DNS to set up. Replies go to your own email address. For a first few dozen users, that is enough.

When to add your own domain

Add it when any of these is true:

  • You want mail to come from your own address. Once people pay you, the address they see should be yours.
  • You send more than 50 a day. Through Kicklace's sender the limit is 500 a day once your domain is verified. With your own Resend account there is no limit of ours.
  • You want replies in one place. With your own domain, replies can come back into Kicklace's Mail, on the person who wrote.

If none of these is true yet, leave DNS for later.

How to add it later

In Kicklace it is Settings → Sending, in four steps:

  1. Domain. Your domain, the DNS records to add, and a Check DNS button that says what it found in plain words.
  2. Defaults. The name and address your email comes from, the reply-to, and a test to yourself.
  3. Replies. A subdomain that takes replies, like reply.your-domain.com.
  4. Inbox. An address anybody can write to, like help@your-domain.com.

Kicklace checks your domain again every day and tells you if it stops working. If you already send with Resend, you can skip the DNS: connect your own account and pick a domain you verified there (your own Resend account). Email has the rest.

What to avoid

  • Waiting for DNS before you send anything. A welcome email from a plain sender beats no welcome email.
  • Half-finished records. If you start on your domain, finish it, and check it, before you send from it.
  • Emailing people who never asked. The sender matters less than who you write to. Kicklace only emails somebody who asked, or who got in touch first.

How Kicklace fits

Paste your website's address and Kicklace reads it, proposes the stages your customers go through, and writes the first emails in your voice. Nothing sends until you switch a sequence on, and you can start before your domain is set up. See it in the demo.

Kicklace is free up to 1,000 contacts, sending from its own address with your name on it. Your own domain is part of Starter, $25 a month. The details are on pricing.

FAQ

Will my emails land in spam without my own domain?

Nobody can promise where an email lands. What helps either way is writing to people who asked for it, a plain message from a real name, and a clear way to stop. Every tip or check-in from Kicklace carries Stop these emails, one click.

Can I use my own Resend account instead?

Yes. Connect it and Kicklace sends through your account, with a domain you already verified there. Nothing to add on the Kicklace side. If your key stops working, Kicklace sends through its own sender and tells you once.
