Using AI to write email sequences in your own voice

AI is good at a first draft and bad at knowing what is true. What to give it, what to check before sending, and how Kicklace writes from your site.

The short answer

Let AI write the first draft and keep the last read for yourself. Give it real material, keep each email to one job, and read every email before it goes out. You are the only one who knows what is true about your product and what sounds like you.

Give it something real to work from

An email written from nothing sounds like it came from nothing. Before you ask for a sequence, have these ready:

  • what you sell and who it is for, in two sentences;
  • the one thing a new person should do next;
  • two or three emails you have really sent, so it can hear how you write;
  • the facts it must not get wrong: names, prices, links, what the product does not do.

Without them you get "We're excited to have you on board" and a paragraph that could be from any company.

Why AI email sounds like AI

Most of it is easy to spot and easy to fix:

  • A first line that says nothing, like a greeting followed by a compliment.
  • Big words where a small one works.
  • Dashes and exclamation marks piled into every paragraph.
  • Six sentences where two would do.
  • A feature your product does not have. This one is the worst, because it is a promise.

Ask for short, plain and specific, and say so in the prompt. Then cut what is left over.

What to check before you send

  1. Every fact. Features, prices, dates, and whether each link opens.
  2. Read it aloud. If you would not say it to the person, rewrite it.
  3. One ask. One link or one question per email, not three.
  4. The right person at the right time. Check who gets it and what happens before it, so no one gets two emails that say the same thing.
  5. Blanks. If the email uses a first name or any other detail, look at one with it filled in.
  6. A test to yourself. Open it on your phone.
  7. Why they are getting it. An email people did not expect needs a line saying why.

How Kicklace does it

Kicklace reads your site: what you sell, what it is built with, and the forms on it. It proposes the stages your customers go through and writes your first emails in your voice from what it read. You read them, change what you like, and switch them on. Try it on your own site in the demo, with no sign-up.

Later, an email with no words yet has Write it for me. Kicklace writes it from where it sits on your Lifecycle map and what comes before it, in your voice, and you change whatever you like.

Ask Kicklace remembers what you tell it about your business. Say "remember that we only sell to freelancers" and every email Kicklace writes for you knows it from then on. Settings → Kicklace lists what it remembers, and "forget that" takes one back. Ask can write a draft and give you the link, but it never sends an email. A person presses send.

The checks above are yours. Kicklace gives you room to make them:

  • Nothing sends until you switch a sequence on.
  • Before you do, Kicklace replays the last 30 days and shows who would have got what, and who would have been skipped and why. A test email goes to you alone, exactly as it would arrive.
  • An email with a variable that fills itself in is read before it goes. It waits on Home, under Needs you, as it will arrive. Approve it or decline it.
  • Every list email says why the person is getting it and carries a one-click unsubscribe.

Settings → Kicklace has one switch for everything the AI does. Off, and nothing from your workspace goes to a model. Kicklace is free up to 1,000 contacts (pricing).

FAQ

Will people know an email was written by AI?

Generic is what gives it away: the vague opener, the long sentences, a promise nothing backs up. Specific facts, short sentences and your own edits are what make an email read like you. Either way, you are the one sending it, so read it as the person who will receive it.

Can I tell it how I write?

Yes. Kicklace writes the first drafts from what your own site says, in your voice. Tell Ask Kicklace things about your business, and it remembers them for every email it writes after that.

Do I still need to read the emails?

Yes. Kicklace shows you each email before anything is switched on, and reading it is your part. The onboarding email sequence guide lists what each email in one should do.
