Welcome email template for SaaS, with subject lines
A welcome email for a new SaaS sign-up: the words Kicklace sends when somebody makes an account, subject lines to pick from, and why it names one first step.
- Goes
- Right away, when they make an account
- To
- Everyone who creates an account.
- Stops
- Nothing to stop: each person gets it once
The email
Welcome to [Product], {{first_name}}
Hi {{first_name}}, Thanks for signing up for [Product]. The best place to start is the first thing you came for, and it takes a few minutes. If anything gets in the way, reply to this email. It comes to me.
{{first_name}} is each person’s first name. If your tool uses another tag, swap it in.
Subject lines
- Welcome to [Product], {{first_name}}in the email above
- Welcome to [Product]
- Thanks for signing up for [Product]
- Your [Product] account is ready
- A quick hello from the person who built [Product]
- [Product] is ready when you are
Why it works
Somebody who has just made an account is looking at your product right now, so the welcome is the one email they are sure to open. Its job is small: say hello, name the one thing worth doing first, and let them know a person will answer if they reply.
That last part matters more than it looks, because it gives a stuck person somewhere to go that is not a support page.
Make it yours
- Replace “the first thing you came for” with the thing itself: “import your first customers”, “create your first invoice”.
- Sign it with your own name and keep the line about replies, as long as replies reach you.
- Cut anything that is not the first step. The rest belongs in the emails after it.

The very short one
You're in
Hi {{first_name}}, Thanks for trying [Product]. Start with this one step: [link to the first step]. If anything is unclear, reply to this email.

Where it goes
On your Lifecycle map this email hangs off the Created an account stage. The emails there, in the order they go:
- Welcomethis pageRight away, when they make an account
- Your first step2 days after sign-up
- Anything in the way?7 days after sign-up
How Kicklace sends it
Kicklace hears about a sign-up from your own server with the kicklace package, from Clerk or Kinde, or from a new row in your users table, which it reads every hour. When somebody makes an account they reach the Created an account stage, and the first email goes within about a minute.
Kicklace writes a first version in your voice from what it reads on your site, and you change whatever you like. Nothing sends until you switch it on. Before you do, it shows who would have got it over the last 30 days, and you can send yourself a test. Each person gets it once.
Questions
What to say in a welcome email?
Thank them, say in a sentence what the product does for them, and point at the one first step. End by telling them replies reach you.
Which onboarding emails does a SaaS need?
Three cover the first week: this welcome right away, an activation email on day 2 for anybody who has not started, and an inactive user email on day 7. The onboarding sequence guide puts them side by side.
How soon should a welcome email go out?
Within a minute or two of sign-up, while they are still looking at the product.
Free up to 1,000 contacts.
