The email

[Product]To someone on a trial

Your trial ends soon

Hi {{first_name}}, Your [Product] trial ends in a few days. If you'd like to keep going, nothing else is needed from you after you choose a plan.

{{first_name}} is each person’s first name. If your tool uses another tag, swap it in.

Subject lines

  • Your trial ends soonin the email above
  • Your [Product] trial ends on [day]
  • What happens when your [Product] trial ends
  • Your [Product] trial ends in 3 days
  • Keep your [Product] account?
  • Did you get to try [Product]?

Why it works

Nobody likes a surprise at the end of a trial, whether it is a charge they forgot about or a project that disappears. An email a few days ahead gives them time to decide and says what happens either way.

The date and what happens next do most of the work, so they belong in the first lines.

Make it yours

  • The words above say nothing else is needed once they choose a plan. Change them to match what really happens: a card is charged, the account moves to a free plan, or it pauses.
  • Say how many days. Stripe tells Kicklace three days before a trial ends, so “in 3 days” is true when the email comes from Stripe.
  • Put the price and the way to cancel within reach.

Write yours from your URL

Paste your site's address and the generator writes this email for your product, where your site offers a trial.

Where it goes

On your Lifecycle map this email hangs off the Trial ending side road. It is the only email there.

How Kicklace sends it

Connect Stripe under Settings, Connections, with one restricted key and no code (Stripe has the steps). Stripe tells Kicklace three days before a trial ends, and that lands on the person as a trial ending, with nothing to post from your own code. A side road on your map, called Trial ending, starts from it and sends this email. It is an account email, so it goes unless the address bounced or the person complained. Kicklace only reads Stripe, so it never charges anybody. The events behind it are in the Stripe events library.

Kicklace writes a first version in your voice from what it reads on your site, and you change whatever you like. Nothing sends until you switch it on. Before you do, it shows who would have got it over the last 30 days, and you can send yourself a test. Each person gets it once.

Questions

How many days before a trial ends should I send the email?

Three is a sensible default: long enough to act on, short enough that the trial is still on their mind. Stripe tells Kicklace three days before a trial ends, so that is when this one goes.

Should the trial ending email mention the price?

Yes, if the trial turns into a charge. People about to be charged want to know how much and when, and leaving it out brings a reply asking for it anyway.

What if they never used the product?

Then a reminder about the trial is not the real problem. An activation email earlier in the trial means fewer people reach this point unused.
